the sitting tenants - from the ground up......

Never underestimate the power of a song. It can elevate you to unimaginable heights; and yet it can take you down further than you’ve ever known. It can inspire greatness; it can also provoke intense sadness, so never, never think light of its power. Look what it did for me…Look what it did for you…
It was with all of this in mind, I picked up the first offering from Wiltshire’s finest, The Sitting Tenants. In this congested world of computer driven pap that allows every Tom, Peter or Andre a voice, it’s a marvellous achievement that never once compromises on its direction, or reneges on its inert soulfulness. Take, “Leave Me Alone” for instance, a joyous two minutes that fuses traces of REM with the Byrds into a sound all of its own; or the jaunty “Molly”, a song that even the Small Faces would be eager to get their grubby mitts on.
But the album mines far deeper than just revisiting sound. Listen to “Tickled Pink” and you’ll discover a brilliantly crafted pop paean which revolves within its own joyous metre. “Meantime” is a particular highlight, its lyrics as deep and challenging anything that a “Play For Today” could have conjured up in its glory days. “A Kind Of Loving” also references quality drama, as does “Stealing Apples On A Sunday” – a supremely English snapshot of living within the borders of this diverse land.
To my seasoned ears, The Sitting Tenants are a refreshing breath of fresh air, a beacon of light in a dismal landscape. The sounds contained within clearly revel in the differing environments that sparked their creation, from hurry-home chimneys to sweaty R&B clubs, from luscious field to yesterdays memories -it's all here. Spawned from the soulful vocals of Rob Dady to the incisive guitar licks of John Sawyer – from the strident bass of Pat Luszcz and anchoring rhythm of drummer of Luke Bibby, the Sitting Tenants have proved that their lease will be long and varied. Are you sitting comfortably? Well then, enjoy!
